After leaving Bangor on Sunday morning, we drove along the coast of Maine to Lubec. Its the eastern point of the US-nothing more east in the US except water. We found our home for the week-a small house off the road that overlooks the bay. Its quiet and peaceful. the house is reconditioned in a contemporary, eclectic style. We're very comfortable...although the power was out for a few hours last night. We rode bikes to the beach and walked along the shore picking up round rocks. We also saw a nervous red-winged blackbird who called for us to go somewhere else. We then rode our bikes a few miles down the road toward West Quoddy lighthouse-we then rode home. We drove onto Campobello Island from Lubec Bridge (FDR Memorial Bridge) built in 1962. At the border, we needed nothing-no passport, no ID, just an assertion we were US residents who weren't packing firearms or other contraband. Kathie and I then drove around Campobello-briefly saw the Roosevelt cottage, and had a very nice-if not expensive- haddock dinner with blueberry pie for dessert. We bought milk, coffee cream and butter-AND MINI-WHEATS at a convenience store. When we returned to our house, the power was back on. Night brought restful sleep!
